What is a hob cutter?

A hob cutter (or gear hob) is a rotating cutting tool used in the gear hobbing process to manufacture external gears, worm wheels, and splined shafts. The hob has helical flutes forming cutting teeth. During hobbing, both the hob and workpiece rotate in a timed relationship, generating the gear tooth profile progressively. Hobbing is the most productive method for high-volume gear manufacture.

What is the difference between TiN and TiAlN coatings?

TiN (Titanium Nitride) is a gold-coloured hard coating that reduces friction and increases wear resistance. It provides 2–3× longer tool life compared to uncoated hobs at conventional cutting speeds. TiAlN (Titanium Aluminium Nitride) is a superior coating that provides better performance at higher cutting speeds and temperatures — particularly effective for dry hobbing and high-speed CNC gear cutting. For best results in modern CNC gear hobbing, we recommend TiAlN coating.

What module hobs does SK Broach manufacture?

SK Broach manufactures gear hobs from Module 0.5 (fine pitch instrument gears) to Module 10 (large industrial gears). Non-standard modules and special pressure angles are available to customer drawings.

Can you supply hobs for worm gear cutting?

Yes. We supply worm gear hobs for single and multi-start worms to DIN and custom specifications. Please provide your worm parameters (lead angle, axial pitch, number of starts, lead) when enquiring.

What is the lead time for hob cutters?

Standard DIN 8002 modules from our production range: 2–3 weeks. TiN/TiAlN coated versions: add 3–5 days. Custom modules or special specifications: 3–5 weeks.
