Frequently Asked Questions

What is a spline broach?
A spline broach is a multi-tooth cutting tool used to machine internal spline profiles — either involute (curved tooth form) or straight-sided — in bores. The broach is pushed or pulled through the workpiece bore, with each tooth removing a precise amount of material until the complete spline profile is formed. Spline broaches are used extensively in automotive gearboxes, EV drivetrains, aerospace couplings, and industrial power transmission.
What is the difference between involute and straight-sided splines?
Involute splines have teeth with an involute profile (like gear teeth), providing excellent load-sharing and self-centering. They are the most common type in modern automotive and industrial applications. Straight-sided splines (SAE) have flat, parallel-sided teeth and are used in older designs and heavy-duty applications where simpler manufacturing was preferred. SK Broach manufactures both types.
What materials are your spline broaches made from?
SK Broach uses M35 Cobalt HSS as standard for spline broaches due to the demanding cutting conditions (interrupted cut across multiple teeth). ASP2030 powder metallurgy HSS is available for maximum tool life in high-volume production. Both materials are heat treated to 63–66 HRC.
Can you make spline broaches for EV applications?
Yes. We supply spline broaches for electric vehicle drivetrain components including motor shaft splines, reduction gear hubs, and differential couplings. EV applications often require tighter tolerances — contact us with your drawing and we will confirm capability.
Do you supply spline broaches to the aerospace industry?
Yes. We are an approved vendor for HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) and Ordnance Factory India. We supply spline broaches for aerospace coupling and transmission applications with full material certification and inspection documentation.
What is the typical lead time for spline broaches?
Standard DIN 5480 / ASA B92.1 modules in our standard range: 2–3 weeks. Non-standard modules, special pressure angles, or custom profiles: 3–5 weeks. Contact us for your specific requirement.
