A round broach (also called a circular broach) is a cylindrical cutting tool used to size and finish circular bores to precise diameters and tolerances. It is used when boring or reaming does not provide sufficient accuracy or surface finish. The broach is pulled or pushed through the bore, with progressive teeth each removing a small amount of material until the final diameter is achieved.

A reamer removes very small amounts of material (typically 0.1–0.5mm) and is a rotary cutting tool. A round broach is a linear tool that can remove larger amounts of material (0.5–2mm typical) in a single pass while achieving excellent surface finish and tight tolerances. Broaching is generally more productive for high-volume bore finishing than reaming.

SK Broach manufactures round broaches to achieve H6 and H7 bore tolerances as standard. H6 (tighter) is typically used for precision bearing seats and instrument bores. H7 is the most common tolerance for general engineering bores.

Yes. Chip breakers can be added to round broaches on request. They are particularly useful when broaching ductile materials (aluminium alloys, soft steels) that tend to produce long, stringy chips.
